Sophisticated Telephone Systems Are Now Affordable for Home Use

It used to be that a phone system for a home would be an outrageous extravagance. But as telephone technology offers more capability at lower prices, and people's telecommunications needs at home keep expanding, it is often practical to meet these more sophisticated requirements with a telephone system.

Recently S & F partner Joseph Fey went to Scottsdale, Arizona for training on the newest products from telephone system maker Vodavi. Fey explains "Vodavi has taken a look

at trends in how people work, especially the dramatic increase in home based businesses and telecommuters, and they have developed a very powerful, reasonably priced system that not only supports telephones, faxes and Internet connections, it also provides intercom, monitoring and family radio type functions. When I saw it, I could not wait to install it in my own home."

It is simple to monitor children's activities and to restrict phone use with a phone system.

A telephone system provides many more functions than an ordinary phone and answering machine. You can restrict phones in children's bedrooms to have no long distance, and so they cannot pick up while someone else is on the phone. You can use those same phones to listen to your children, much like a baby monitor. You can also page everyone when dinner is ready, you are ready to start a soccer match, or to review a school project, the same as you might use an intercom.

If you currently need multiple phone lines for regular voice use as well as faxing and Internet, you may be able to get by with fewer lines with a telephone system. A phone system uses extensions rather than dedicating a particular line for the fax or Internet. you just need as many phone lines as you want for concurrent calls for any purpose. The phone system handles the rest.
Telephones come in a range of colors and styles. This one easily handles multiple lines and caller id.

S & F just installed one of these systems in a doctor's home. Because he frequently works at home and has teenage children, he has four lines. He also has a gate at the entrance to his driveway. He can control the latch on the gate from any of his phones - including a 2.4 gigabyte cordless phone that he can use anywhere within a one acre radius of his home. He especially likes caller id so he can easily determine if a patient or friend is calling, or a salesman.
These systems do not require any special wiring. They can even work with old fashioned quad wires, round wires with small red, green, black and yellow wires inside, that were used in most homes until fifteen years ago; more modern twisted pair or category 3 wiring that can also be used for a 10 Base T LAN or a wireless LAN; or category 5 wiring. For new construction, S&F recommends category 5 wiring because it can handle faster LANs, and its cost is about the same as twisted pair.
Joseph Fey takes an evening support call in his backyard.

A Vodavi phone system easily fits in a utility room or closet.

For about $925 a residence or small business gets support for three phone lines and eight extensions, as well as three digital display phones in a range of colors. In Fey's home there are extensions in his office, the kitchen, the boy's room, living room and the master bedroom. A single line card, which provides support for cordless phones and provides monitoring, is a little extra. The same system can grow to support 12 lines and 32 extensions, and it can easily be upgraded to support more as needed. In addition to voice mail and caller id, these phones also support basic business functions like hold and transferring calls.

S&F will gladly work with a home or business owner to tailor a phone system to their needs, and to add any wiring that may be necessary.

Surveillance cameras integrated with the Internet for business and/or home use are another option.
